Belmont, Smokehouse and Stables
Painting by Ross Merrill
Painting by Bobbi Pratte |
BELMONT FREDERICKSBURG, VA AUGUST 26, 2007 (notes and photos by Ed Cooper) We began arriving at Belmont between 8:00 and 8:30 to paint at artist Gary Melcher's home. We were admitted to the grounds even though the house doesn't open until 1:00 on Sunday The weather was quite pleasant while we were at Belmont. The sun was out but the temperature and humidity were fairly moderate and there was adequate shade for everyone. There was also a pleasant breeze, at least for those on the hill at Belmont. Ross Merrill decided to paint the Rappahannock River at the bottom of the hill and unfortunately had no breeze, but he still managed to do a beautiful painting. Larry Altaffer and Mary Anne Warner situated themselves in the shade at the end of the lawn and did paintings of the summer house and the flower garden. Kathleen Walsh carefully situated herself in the shade of the main house and painted the light showing through the trees while Bobbi Pratte ventured down the front lawn to paint an urn situated on the wall by the wildlife area. Ed Cooper must have had insomnia because he did a painting of the Rappahannock before the gate opened at Belmont. 3 members were present: Altaffer, Merrill, and Cooper. There were also several guests present: Kathleen Walsh was the guest of Sara Poly; Bobbi Pratte and Mary Anne Warner were the guests of Dick Whiteley. |
